Humble Gods

Humble Gods was a Hermosa Beach punk band formed by Daddy X

Humble Gods was a punk rock band from Hermosa Beach, California, created by Daddy X in the mid 1990s. The group moved through several lineups in a short period of time and released three studio albums across two separate runs. Their story includes frequent member changes, personal struggles, and a brief return years after their initial breakup.

Starting a New Project in Hermosa Beach

Humble Gods was formed by Daddy X, who was already active in multiple projects. At the time, he had connections to punk, skate culture, and hip hop scenes, and wanted to put together a band rooted in punk rock. The early lineup included a rotating group of musicians, with Daddy X at the center.

The band’s first album, Humble Gods, was released on October 17, 1995 through WEA. The record introduced the project as a separate outlet from Daddy X’s other work and set the tone for what would be a fast moving and often turbulent run.

Shifting Lineups and No Heroes

During the band’s early years, members included Doug Carrion, Byron McMackin, Josh Freese, Scott Koziol, and Brad Gordon. Past and overlapping members also included Ricky Vodka, Spike Xavier, Lou Dog, and Bianca Halstead. One of the most notable contributors was Jason Thirsk of Pennywise, who joined the band for their second album.

The album No Heroes was released on October 15, 1996 through Hollywood Records. Thirsk recorded bass parts for the album while dealing with personal struggles related to alcoholism and depression. Shortly after the album was completed, he died on July 29, 1996 at the age of 28.

Loss, Disbandment, and a Pause

Tragedy continued to surround the band when bassist Bianca Halstead was killed in a car accident while on tour with Betty Blowtorch. These losses deeply affected the group and contributed to Humble Gods disbanding in 1997.

Following the breakup, Daddy X turned his focus back to Kottonmouth Kings, which went on to become a major independent hip hop success during the 2000s. Humble Gods remained inactive for several years.

A Short Return and Final Release

In 2003, Humble Gods reunited and recorded a third album. Born Free was released on January 6, 2004 through Suburban Noize Records. While the reunion brought the name back briefly, the band did not continue long term after the album’s release.
